Jan. 2, 2010: I took my shower, intending to get a jump on the day to work on my intentions for the new year. I was so happy the books were fully closed on 2009….it had been a tough year. Drying off, I glanced in the mirror. What the HELL?????!
26 days later, I sat in a surgeon’s office with two of my closest friends. Cindy is a 9 year BC survivor, and Terri is the one you want in your foxhole….no matter what! Dr. Kerlin’s actual words were a blur, but the meaning was crystal clear. “Kathie….that lump in your breast? Yeah….it’s a problem.” Turns out, a tangelo sized problem!
I am truly one of the lucky recipients of a Breast Cancer diagnosis. It was the wake-up call I needed to clean up my act and learn to truly take care of myself. Today, I am thriving and will continue to do so!
Statistically, someone receives a breast cancer diagnosis every 3 minutes - 480 people - every single day. Every year, millions of dollars are raised to understand the causes of breast cancer. Each year, researchers receive millions to continue to improve the diagnostic tools and treatments of this disease that affects 1 in 4 women every year. I am the beneficiary of that research, as are some of my closest friends and colleagues. I am profoundly grateful to the men and women who have answered the call to service in this field.
The Heart of Hope bracelet benefiting Breast Cancer is a beautiful and VERY pink tribute to every single person (men get this diagnosis as well!) who has had to sit through the “we found a lump” conversation, fight through the tears, and take the first baby steps into a new life. It is dedicated to my friend Sunny, who walks 40 miles (not counting the 100’s of training miles she logs!) every year in memory of her sister Carolyn, an oncology nurse, who earned her angel wings…..far too soon. It recognizes and cheers on the friends and family members, who selflessly circle the wagons to protect, care for, encourage and love a cancer patient. It honors the gifted clinicians and technicians who diagnose, worry about and treat their cancer patients. And finally, the donation portion supports the researchers who have made finding a cure…sooner rather than later…their life’s work.
