Hopefully, I will never know the intensity of feelings that lead to the decision to end one’s life. The pain and intensity of feeling related to losing someone I love to suicide – that, I can speak to. For me, it’s the unanswered questions; Why? Why now? What could I have done? Why didn’t I see? Why wasn’t I paying attention? What now? So many questions and damn few answers.
My nephew Jeremy took his life during the time Bill and I were coping with his rapidly progressing ALS. I’m profoundly saddened that a once vibrant young man, was in so much pain that he felt he had nothing left to live for. I’m equally sad for his mother, and those of us left behind, wondering what difference we could have made….had we only known.
I’ve done a lot of reading and discovered that sometimes, the difference between living life and ending it, is a simple phone call; to a friend, to a family member, or to a caring volunteer at the other end of a hotline. To each one who answers that call….thank you for the toe-hold on life you provide. To each of you reading this who has lost a loved one, I admire and respect the courage you display to get up and live each day; to honor yourself and the memory of the ones you have loved and lost physically. I believe we are never truly separated – even by death.
I hope the pale blue, green and crystal shades in this bracelet will remind you of glittering seaglass and bring you peace of mind – if only for one breath. The design was inspired by the favorite colors, beach serenity and moon & stars favored by Amanda, a beautiful, bright young woman who became scared of life and took hers. Her mom Janis and I collaborated on the final design as a way to honor Amanda and keep her spirit alive. The moon & stars charm pays tribute to the “Out of the Darkness” theme chosen by the AFSP for their annual walks. The HOPE charm honors the prayer of all survivors of suicide – through education and outreach, we can remove the stigma of suicide and prevent a senseless heartache.
This bracelet is dedicated to Flo – Jeremy’s mom, Janice – Amanda’s mom, Dorte – Nick’s mom, Kathryn – Jonathan’s wife, Tim, Diane and Terika – Timmy’s parents and sister, and Mark - Megan Joy's dad.
